Broadford on the route
The North Coast 500 is one of the world’s most scenic driving routes, a 516-mile loop around the northern Highlands that has become a bucket-list trip for many. Skye is not technically part of the official NC500 route, but for most travellers it’s an unmissable detour. With its dramatic mountains, fairytale landscapes and rich history, the Isle of Skye is often remembered as the highlight of the whole journey.
The North Coast 500
Launched in 2015, the NC500 links Inverness with the far north of Scotland, weaving through Wester Ross, Sutherland, Caithness and back down the east coast. Along the way, you’ll find towering sea cliffs, white-sand beaches, rugged mountain passes and welcoming Highland communities. The route can be completed in around five days, but most visitors take longer, leaving time for walks, attractions and detours like Skye.
Why Skye is a Must-Do Detour
The Isle of Skye offers a very different feel to the mainland: jagged peaks, sea lochs cutting deep into the land, and some of Scotland’s most photographed landmarks. From Broadford, you can reach famous spots like the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Neist Point and Dunvegan Castle. Boat trips to Loch Coruisk or wildlife safaris give you a chance to see Skye from the water, while shorter walks closer to Broadford provide an easy way to stretch your legs between long drives.
Broadford: A Perfect Stop
Located just as you cross the Skye Bridge, Broadford is the island’s second-largest village and a natural base for NC500 travellers. Whether you’re staying for a night or a few days, the village has everything you need — from shops and galleries to local walks and boat trips. Broadford Hotel offers comfortable rooms, hearty Highland dining and the chance to relax before continuing your adventure north.
