Boat Trips near Broadford Bay

There’s something truly special about seeing Skye from the water, and taking a boat tour during your stay brings a whole new perspective to the island’s beauty. Broadford Hotel is located a few steps away from Broadford Bay, so as a guest, you’re already perfectly placed to explore nature along the shoreline and beyond. Travelling by boat, you’ll get a chance to spot incredible wildlife up close while admiring breathtaking scenery and iconic landmarks, like the Cuillin Mountains and the Old Man of Storr, from fresh and awe-inspiring perspectives. It's a peaceful and exciting experience that will stay with you long after you’re back on dry land.

What boat trips are available?

While there aren’t any boat trips that set off directly from Broadford itself, we highly recommend the Bella Jane and Misty Isle boat trips that leave from Elgol – they’re a real treat. Elgol is roughly a 45-minute drive from the hotel, or you can take a bus from a stop near the hotel. These boat trips take you out to the stunning Loch Coruisk, an inland fresh water loch that lies at the foot of the Black Cuillin. As legend has it, the loch is home to the kelpie, a shape-shifting horse-like creature that can assume human form. It is one of the most breathtaking spots on the island, and along the way you’ll pass a seal colony. It is well worth a trip and a fantastic way to see a wilder, and more mysterious, side of Skye.

Wildlife you might spot

From seals basking on the rocks and seabirds swooping overhead, to dolphins and even whales gliding through the waves, you’ll have lots of wonderful opportunities to spot wildlife out at sea – so keep your eyes peeled! Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or just hoping for a special moment, there’s always something remarkable to see out on the water.

Birdwatching

The dramatic cliffs around the island are home to Skye’s most impressive bird species. In fact, boat crews often toss fish into the water to tempt these majestic birds closer, giving you a front-row seat to the action!

Dolphin watching

During the summer months, dolphins are a common sight and are often seen playing in the wake of the boat. Just watch for splashes, fins, or sleek shapes breaking the surface.

Whale watching

Minke Whales, the most frequently spotted whales in the waters around Skye, are usually seen between May and October. Whales are notoriously elusive – keep an eye out for patches of mist on the horizon or a small fin cresting the surface.

Best time of year for boat tours around Skye

If you’re wondering what time of year is best to head out on a boat trip during your stay on Skye, remember each season has its own charm, so it really depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

Summer (June to August) is the most popular time to be out on the water, and for a good reason. The days are long, the weather is usually at its best, and the chances of spotting wildlife like seals, dolphins, and even the occasional whale are at their highest. It’s the perfect time to enjoy being at sea, soaking up the views and the fresh salty air.

Shoulder seasons (April to May, and September to October) are a wonderful choice if you prefer things a little quieter. There are fewer crowds, but still plenty of wildlife around, and the weather can be beautifully crisp and clear. You might catch some dramatic skies or golden evening light that makes everything feel extra special.

Winter (November to March) brings a very different kind of beauty. While boat tours during the winter depend more on the weather, and sightings may be rarer, the possibility of catching the Northern Lights and snow-dusted peaks create a truly magical atmosphere. If you’re up for a more dramatic adventure and don’t mind a bit of unpredictability, winter trips can be a truly memorable experience. Just remember to be prepared to wrap up warm!

Getting prepared for your trip

The best advice for preparing for your unforgettable boat trip around Skye, is to embrace the elements! Out on the water, the weather loves to keep you on your toes, and wind, salt spray and sunshine can all happen within a single hour. To stay comfortable, dress in layers so you can adjust your temperature easily, and pop on shoes with good grip – decks can get slippery in wet weather. A waterproof and windproof jacket is a must (even if the sky looks blue), and don’t forget the little things that make a big difference: suncream, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and a bottle of water. For peace of mind, pack all your essentials in a dry bag to protect them from rogue waves and sea spray.

Excited to get out on the water?

You can easily book boat trips in advance through their websites, which we recommend doing, especially during the busier summer months when spaces fill up quickly. Booking ahead not only guarantees your spot, but also gives you time to plan the rest of your day – perhaps a whisky or a pint back in the Gabbro Bar before dinner? Both Bella Jane and Misty Isle have easy-to-use websites with all the details you’ll need, including trip times, prices, and what to expect from each trip. It’s a great way to get excited and ensure everything runs smoothly.
