During the course of the 20th century, the ferries situated at Ballachulish on Loch Leven; at Dornie on Loch Long; and at Kyle of Lochalsh for those bound for the Isle of Skye, were all replaced by bridges. The ancient ferry at Dornie was replaced by a toll-bridge in 1940. Ballachulish ferry was to follow in 1975. The Kyle of Lochalsh ferry was made redundant when the Skye Bridge opened in 1995. Armadale Castle Garden and Museum of the Isles
Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles is set in the heart of a stunning 20,000 acre Highland estate. This estate, was once part of the traditional lands of Clan Donald. The Trust has restored the gardens and part of the Castle, created the Museum of the Isles, founded the Study Centre, built holiday accommodation and established a visitor centre that appeals to all age groups. In the stables you will find a licensed restaurant and shop with mail order facilities. The centre also invites membership of the Clan Donald Lands Trust. Disabled facilities are available at the centre. The Bright Water Visitor Centre is an exciting visitor centre in Kyleakin based on Eilean Ban Island and gives a chance to learn about its cultural and natural history. Based in Kyleakin on Skye, the centre covers topics including Gavin Maxwell, the flora and fauna of the island, the lighthouse and local history (including stories recorded in Gaelic and English). It is a highly interactive centre with lots to see and do for all ages.
